Interior
of a chapel belonging to a former leper hospital in Knightsbridge,
London. The origins and age of the hospital are unknown,
but the chapel was rebuilt in 1629 when it was in an old
and ruinous state, so it was of medieval origin. The chapel
was used during Regency times for worship, although it was
not allowed to perform marriages and baptisms. A charity
school was established next door in 1783, which supported
36 boys and 18 girls. The children learned reading, writing
and arithmetic. In addition, the girls learned plain work.
Below
is an exterior engraving of the chapel.
