An Ancient Crypt in St Martin's Lane

View of a crypt on the site of the late College of St Martin's le Grand, discovered during clearing work prepatory to building the new post office. The College of St Martin le Grand in St Martin's Lane, within Aldersgate, was founded in 1056. The College was surrendered to Edward VI in 1548, thereafter shortly being demolished. One the east part of the site a large tavern was built, while houses occupied the rest of the site. It was when these houses were demolished to make way for the new post Office that the ancient crypt was discovered. This engraving dates from the early nineteenth century.

Below are two more views of the crypt.
