Priory of the Holy Trinity called Christ-Church near Aldgate

Ruins of part of the Priory of the Holy Trinity called Christ-Church near Aldgate. The original priory, possibly founded by Matilda, queen of Henry I, occupied a piece of ground in the parish of St Catherine, towards Aldgate, lying lengthwise between the King's Street leading to Aldgate, and the north side of the chapel of St Michael at the junction of Leadenhall and Fenchurch Streets . The priory was disbanded during the dissolution, its buildings either broken up or falling into decay during subsequent centuries.

In its heyday the priory was very well endowed and very wealthy, although apparently it was a state of some disrepair even before the dissolution.

Below is an engraving of the gateway into the priory drawn in the late eighteenth century.
