The Thames Tunnel

Connecting Wapping and Rotherhithe, the Thames Tunnel was the first underwater tunnel in the world. Work commenced in 1805, but there were numerous problems, and the tunnel was not completed until 1843. Many lives were lost during its construction. The tunnel remained open for foot traffic until the 1860s when it was converted for use by the East London Railway. It is still in use by the Underground today.
