Arthur
Onslow, a Speaker of the House of Commons, once lived many years in
Ember Court. The house was built of brick, but during the Georgian period
it was covered with plaster work to give it the appearance of stone.
An extensive park with lawns and many trees surrounded the house, and
the house itself boasted many elegant furnishings and a very handsome
library. After Arthur Onslow and then his son, Lord Cranley, the house
had as successive inhabitants Sir Francis Ford and, in Regency times,
Colonel Taylor.
