House of Correction, north side of Coldbath Square

The House of Correction was built during the reign of George III. There were 218 single cells, 16 of which had no light save that which came through a single aperture over the door; these 16 were used for prisoners of a "refractory nature". There were also a number of larger cells which were used as work and spinning rooms for the inmates. The prison had eight large yards for exercise.
