King's Bench Prison, Blackman Street

King's Bench Prison stood on the south-west corner of Blackman Street, on the road to the Obelisk, St George's Fields. It was a prison for debtors and for everyone sentenced by the Court of the King's Bench; those who could purchase the liberties had the benefit of walking through Blackman Street and in St George's Fields. The prison contained at least 300 rooms, but was still very crowded in Regency times. Decent accommodations were much more expensive here than they were in Fleet Prison.
