Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea

The Royal Military Asylum in Chelsea was built for the children of the soldiers of the regular army. It stood near the Royal Hospital, adjoining King's Road. In the Regency period this asylum catered for 700 boys and 300 girls. The boys wore red jackets and blue trousers, the girls wore red gowns, blue petticoats and straw bonnets and white aprons. The asylum was commonly called the Duke of York's School as the Duke was its chief patron.
