St Nicholas, Cole-Abbey, Old Fish Street

The church of St Nicholas, Cole-Abbey, on the south side of old Fish Street, at the corner of Labour-in-vain-hill. The name Cole-Abbey likely derives from 'coldharbour' which meant a shelter (thus it is likely there was a shelter, an inn or a lodging house, very close to the church; however, in medieval times churches were literally shelters or refuges in times of troubles or tempest, so the name could allude to that as well). The church burned down in 1666 and was subsequently rebuilt - according to tradition this is the first church Sir Christopher Wren designed after the Great Fire.
