St James, Garlick Hill

At the south-east corner of Garlick Hill stood the church of St James. In ancient times there was a garlic market nearby, called Garlick Hythe, from being a wharf on the bank of the river. Burned to the ground in 1666, a new St James was completed in 1682. From the church projected a very handsome dial, on the top of which was a statue of St James.
