Church of St Antholin,
Sise Lane and Watling Street

At the south-west corner of Sise Lane, on the north side, and near the west end of Watling Street, stands the parish church of St Anthony (dedicated to an Egyptian hermit), commonly called St Antholin, or St Antlin, dating from the twelfth century. It was rebuilt by Thomas Knolles, Lord Mayor, in 1399, and then again by John Tate, mercer, in 1513. In 1616 £1,000 was spent on its beautification. It burned down in the Great Fire of London of 1666 and then rebuilt in 1682 in the manner shown above.
