Church of St James Clerkenwell

The Church of St James Clerkenwell was situated on the north side of Clerkenwell-green. On the spot where this church stood was anciently a priory founded by Jordan Briset. The priory continued until 1539 and the dissolution of the monasteries. The medieval church standing here was a heavy structure, partly Gothic, and was demolished in 1788 (the steeple had previously fallen down in 1623, twice, but was eventually successfully rebuilt). The church pictured above was erected in the very late eighteenth century.
