St Olave Jewry

On the west side of Old Jewry stands the parish church of St Olave Jewry, of very ancient foundation, and originally called Olave Upwell, from its dedication to the saint of that name, and because of a well under the east end, where in Georgian times stood a pump for the use of the public. The 'Jewry' came from the large number of Jews who once lived in this area. The church pictured above was rebuilt after the the Great Fire.
