The King's Weigh House

The original intent of this office was to prevent frauds in the weight of the merchandise merchants imported from overseas, but by the Regency period there was no law requiring merchants to actually weigh their goods. The Weigh Office was built on a piece of land formerly occupied by the church of St Andrew Hubbard, which was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Previous to this the Weigh Office was located on Cornhill.
