St Clement Danes, the Strand

At a small distance from Temple Bar, on the north side of the Strand, stands the parish church of St Clements Danes ('Danes' because tradition has it that many Danes were buried here in early medieval times). The old church was taken down in 1680 and the Georgian structure erected in 1682 under the direction of Sir Christopher Wren.
