Exeter Change, Strand

Nearly opposite the Savoy in the Strand stood Exeter Exchange, taken down in the 1820s for "modern improvements". It was originally a handsome building with an arcade in front and a gallery above with shops in both. The gallery was principally used as lodgings for the shopkeepers and at the east end was an exhibition of living subjects of natural history. The place took its name from having been built upon the site of the mansion house of the earls of Exeter.
