Whittington College, College Hill

On the east side of College Hill is the parish church of St Michael Royal. In 1410 the church was rebuilt and made a college by Sir Richard Whittington, four times Lord Mayor of London, for a master, four fellows, clerks, choristers etc. Adjoining the college was an almshouse for the accommodation of thirteen persons. The old church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and the structure pictured above rebuilt to take its place. The almshouses moved to Highgate sometime early in the nineteenth century, and then in the twentieth to East Grinstead.
