Hungerford Market, the Strand

Hungerford Market was situated between the Strand and the Thames on a site formerly occupied by a large house belonging to the Hungerfords of Fairleigh in Wiltshire. In the late seventeenth century Sir Edward demolished the family mansion and converted the site into a market which was designed principally as a market for vegetables (being so close to the river it was convenient for gardeners to unload their goods). However, the market never flourished and by the 1820s the market was ear-marked for "modern improvements, these being the order of the day".

Part of these improvements was the construction of a bridge to the southern bank of the Thames - see an image.
