The Old White Hart Tavern, Bishopsgate Street. This ancient tavern, which bore the date of 1480 on its front, had been demolished by the 1820s. Its history is uncertain, but it is likely that this was once the inn belonging to the Old Priory of Bethlem for the entertainment or hospitality of strangers. Henry VIII gave the Old Priory, which was in the east, or Bishopsgate Street side of Moorfields, was given to the citizens of London for the use of lunatics (see Bethlem Hospital).
