Somerset House, the Strand

Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset and uncle to Edward VI, built this house in 1549 (see a view of the old Somerset House). In 1775 this structure was demolished by act of Parliament and the building pictured above was built from a design of Sir William Chambers. In the Regency period Somerset House accommodated all public offices (save those of the Treasury, the Secretary of State, the Admiralty, the War and the Excise).
