Tooting

On the road to Epsom is the parish of Tooting. Formerly it had the addition of Graveney, or Gravenelle, from Richard de Gravenelle, one of its lords. The parish is sometimes called Lower Tooting, to distinguish it from a part of Streatham parish, called Upper Tooting, and Tooting Bec, both of which once were in this parish until "the bishop of Baieux got his hands on them". In Regency times the village consisted of two streets, which formed an L. The church, a small building with a low circular tower on its north side, was dedicated to St Nicholas.
