View from Richmond Hill

Anciently Richmond was known as Sheen, a Saxon word meaning resplendent alluding to the singular beauty of the area. The Georgian town of Richmond ran a mile up Richmond Hill, from East Sheen to New Park, and contained several "respectable dwellings". Richmond also contained four almshouses for ten poor widows. An elegant stone bridge of five semicircular arches was built over the Thames at Richmond in 1777.
