Barking, Essex

Dating from the seventh century, Barking Abbey is one of the oldest Christian religious institutions in England. Most of its buildings were demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in the sixteenth century. Only the curfew tower remained. The village itself also dates from Saxon times (existing well before the abbey's foundaiton). Existing about five miles from the eastern edge of Georgian London, Barking's main industry was fishing.
