Charterhouse Square, northern aspect
showing the Charterhouse and its gate

In the Regency period Charterhouse Square was formed on three sides by 'very good houses' while the fourth (west) side was formed by the old walls of the monastery. On the north side was the Charterhouse itself, as well several private houses and Rutland Place. On the east side rose the houses of respectable inhabitants, while the London Infirmary for the Eye occupied the south side of the square. The centre of the square was handsomely railed and shaded with old trees, as it remains to this day.
