Crosby Square

Crosby Square was built c. 1671 when the larger portion of the ancient mansion of Crosby Hall was demolished. In the late eighteenth century a large gateway which had belonged to the demolished medieval mansion still stood in the south-east corner of Crosby Square leading toward St Mary Axe. The round arch of red brick was added on when Crosby Square was constructed in 1677; originally the archway would have been pointed. This was the back entrance to the Crosby Hall and led into gardens or a courtyard.
