Twyford Abbey, West Twyford

Twyford Abbey was the home of the Philpot family of London from the fifteenth through to the eighteenth centuries when it passed into the Cholmeley family. In 1806 Thomas Willan purchased the Abbey. Anciently a moat surrounded the Abbey, but in the early nineteenth century it was filled in and much of the medieval abbey demolished. Willan constructed a Gothic-revival mansion house on the site, which is pictured above. The Abbey was surrounded by agreeable woods, only a small part of which were given over to 'pleasure-gardens'.
