Highgate

A populous hamlet situated on the northern road from London at a distance of four and one half miles from the metropolis. It commanded beautiful views of the city and surrounding countryside. The name possibly derives from an ancient toll-gate on the hill (the tolls taken being due to the Bishop of London). During the eighteenth century many fine villas lined the high street - although many people built at some distance from the street due to the number of runaway carriages and carts on its steep descent.

Highgate Chapel is an ancient structure which (as two thirds of the village) belongs to Hornsey parish.
