Two May Day 'indecents'

 

Two street itinerants on May Day. These 'indecents', as they were often called, hoped to pry money from onlookers by hiring women’s bodices and clothing and aping the ancient (but by the late eighteenth century almost vanished) custom of milk-maids to dance about garlands of ribbons and tulips on May Day.
