Joseph Johnson

Joseph Johnson, from the merchant’s service. Johnson was a beggar who started working Tower Hill where he entertained passersby by singing George Alexander Steven’s “Storm”. By degrees he ventured into the city streets and at length became known as what is called a “Regular Chaunter”. Black Joe (as he was known) wore a model of the ship Nelson on his head which he could, as he bowed, make to appear as if it were sailing on waters.
