The
Temple Church is of great antiquity, being originally the church belonging
to the Order of the Knights Templar. When the Templars were disbanded
in the fourteenth century their London properties ended up in the
hands of the lawyers and barristers of the city who still inhabit
the various Inns of Court.
Far
from the colourful and romantic past of the Templars, in the Georgian
period the Inns of Court and Temple area was inhabited by "mere
plodding, matter of fact men of business".
The
most ancient part of the interior
of the church is the circular portion at the west end.
