Northumberland House, Charing Cross, Strand frontage

Northumberland House, at the south-west corner of the Strand, opposite to the end of St Martin's Lane, was erected on the site of the hospital of St Mary Rounceval, a cell to the priory of the same name in Navarre. In the engraving above, Northumberland House is the one in the centre, with the two towers and the central lion.

The house was the London residence of the earls of Northumberland, passing later into the hands of other peers of the realm. The house was demolished in the late nineteenth century.
