New Custom House, Lower Thames Street

The engraving of the Custom House above shows the building completed in 1817. The first Custom House was built here in 1559 (a thirteenth-century Custom House was built a bit further to the east on Old Wool Quay). The sixteenth-century building was damaged when a nearby store of gunpowder exploded and a new House designed by Sir Christopher Wren was completed in 1718. This burned down in 1814 and yet a new New Custom House completed three years later.
