Shoreditch Church c. 1813

Facing the end of Old Broad Street, the church of St Leonard, Shoreditch, pictured here was erected about 1735 after the ancient medieval church "rent asunder with a frightful sound" during Sunday service, December 13th 1716. The congregation fled, and while none were killed, many were severely injured in the panic and collapse. The eighteenth-century church still stands, although somewhat altered.
