Haberdashers'
Hall, Maiden Lane, Wood Street
The
medieval hall was destroyed in the Great
Fire of London in 1666. Sir
Christopher Wren designed the pictured handsome "respectable
brick" building which opened in 1668. The Hall stood on the north
side of Maiden Lane and the corner of Staining Lane. The Company of
Haberdashers was anciently known by the name of Harriers and Milainers
because they dealt mainly with merchandise imported from Milan. In the
1820s they were known as "The Master and Four Wardens of the fraternity
of the art or mystery of Haberdasher, in the city of London."
The
Hall suffered two further fires in the mid-nineteenth century before
being destroyed during the Blitz.
