John Cary's
Actual Survey of the Country Fifteen Miles Around London1801

John Cary (1754-1835) was one of the most eminent cartographers and publishers of his time.  Both his draughtsmanship and copper engravings were exceptional.

Cary's Actual Survey of the Country Fifteen Miles Round London on a Scale of One Inch to One Mile ... was one of his first London maps. This survey came in the form of a small book that could slip easily into a traveller's or coachman's pocket - it is remarkable that any of these fragile publications have survived, and this is the only copy we have seen.

You can access this map via a key map which leads you to the different sections. Navigation is by clicking within the margins of each segment to move about, or you can move back to the key map.

We are gradually adding links within the map segments themselves showing views of the various estates, houses, villages and landscapes. Currently about half of the Cary segments will have them imbedded within the maps. This is a big task and we're doing it only gradually, but occasionally your mouse pointer may turn to a hand while travelling over the map segments. If it does, click and you'll see a contemporary view and some information about the village.

The map segments are large - again we apologise for loading times, but we were forced to choose between fast loading times and map detail ... and we went for the map detail.

You can also use the search function below to find specific locations.
